I sometimes wonder if the neighborhood we are creating is in reality a ghetto. Are we trying to shut ourselves off from the rest of the world?
I love Israel, do not misunderstand me, but why is my home the place where as a Reform Rabbi I am not considered a rabbi? In my Judaism it should not be a problem for me to stand next to my wife at the tomb of King David. For the Ministry of public places it is.
*Sigh*
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411958894593823280.post-28374322662479590652012-11-01T19:31:11.574+02:002012-11-01T19:31:11.574+02:00 My family spent last Christmas in Florence. We had a tour provided by a local with PhD. Very sweet, but did explain financial hardship of country and how few young people can stay in Florence (Venice even worse). Except for tourism, there is little to drive those economies. My dream is to spend 6 mos. as a resident upon retirement. Hope I am not too old to ride a Vespa!!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411958894593823280.post-53816617611452488512012-11-01T19:30:24.342+02:002012-11-01T19:30:24.342+02:00Very nice post.Very nice post.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411958894593823280.post-59283643073877932942012-11-01T19:29:59.929+02:002012-11-01T19:29:59.929+02:00Good for you!

While driving along the Amalfi Coast (you haven't driven until you have tried the Amalfi Coast) we found ourselves behind a tour bus from Poland. Generally not a problem except, the bus driver panicked and would not move. He parked his bus on a hair pin curve and would not budge. Try getting around a bus on a curve designed for only one vehicle with trucks coming at you from the opposite directions. You just gotta love Italy.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411958894593823280.post-79705232521485644172012-11-01T19:28:57.850+02:002012-11-01T19:28:57.850+02:00Great column Great column Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411958894593823280.post-73534350369324659302012-11-01T19:28:21.413+02:002012-11-01T19:28:21.413+02:00An excellent posting, Alan. We may not always agree but I do enjoy reading your “random thoughts.” We just returned from three and a half weeks in Portugal, Spain and France. We were in Argentina four years ago at election time and there was, as you noted, great interest and anticipation. There may not be the same sense of excitement this year but we found that positive reactions to Obama and to America were widespread. Your tale about Tuscany confirms it.

The Jewish people have the right to their neighborhood or homeland. I pray the day comes when the ecumenically minded Christians, Muslims, and Jews prevail so that nearly everyone is willing to respect each other’s holy sites in Jerusalem.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411958894593823280.post-55268768514949104082012-11-01T19:23:18.040+02:002012-11-01T19:23:18.040+02:00Another excellently written article, Alan. I love...Another excellently written article, Alan. I love the way in which you think and especially the way you express those thoughts. What a solid performance you display of your observations on your latest adventure. This is so thought provoking and oh, so darned insightful. You make me wonder personally about Germany and England where my parents families hailed from and especially England as my father was literally "born on the boat" in 1916 as his father escaped the labour unions of his native country. Their heavy accents were curious to us as children and we thought them dowdy and old "fuddy-duddies" from "the old mother country" who wore dark and strange clothes and shoes. My grandmother made things like minced meat pies (dreadful to my youthful taste), which my father relished. Of course we didn't appreciate what they must have gone through to not only migrate, but also to assimilate into a brand new world---full of others who were in America for reasons of their own.

I suppose I'm not alone in thinking that we seem pretty smug in our notion that we've come a long way, baby. But have we really? Somehow those old traditions should be called upon once in a while and we should savor our roots more than we do. We should be more appreciative of what we have and especially of those who fought the hard fight before us so we could have our privileges and indulgences. We're a spoiled nation of folks who have come to feel entitled to things others suffered and even died to bring us.

Off my soap box now. Thanks as usual for putting the old grey matter into gear. I'm going to have a grand day! Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
